The Holy Week is essentially a commemoration of the life and the death of Jesus Christ for the people of the world and is therefore one of the high holidays of the Christians particularly the Roman Catholics.

2017 Feast of Saint Paul the First Hermit Parish Novena and Mass Schedule

The festivities in San Pablo City, Laguna in connection with the Feast of Saint Paul the First Hermit (San Pablo Ang Unang Ermitanyo) and the annual Coconut (Coco) Festival are well underway. Beyond all the nightly beer plaza as they dubbed it and the much anticipated Mardi Gras Street Dancing Competition (which will happen on January 13), the events are still rooted on religion.

Gratiae Dei: A Benefit Concert for San Pablo Cathedral Restoration

 

  

You can start your weekend with music in your ears, dear reader. With the renovation of the San Pablo Cathedral still underway, additional resources are more than welcome for its continued refurbishment.

For that reason the Cathedral Parish of Saint Paul the First Hermit organized the activity entitled Gratiae Dei (God’s Grace): A Benefit Chorale Concert for the Restoration of the Cathedral to be held on May 22, 2015, 7:00 pm at the Cathedral of Saint Paul the First Hermit. The concert will feature the University of Santo Tomas Singers, 1995 and 2010 ‘Choir of the World’. The group’s conductor will be Prof. Fidel G. Calalang Jr.

2015 “La Noche de los Libros” at Institute Cervantes Manila

Old Philippine Banknotes to be Demonetized this 2015

The ‘old’ Philippine banknotes issued by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas or BSP is set to be demonetized this year 2015. Labeled as the New Design Series or NDS, these old bills (such as the ones you see in the photo above) will be replaced completely by the New Generation Currency or NGC at the start of 2016. This NGC series is the latest of the set of paper money released which we are using already.

This move by the BSP is in accordance with the provisions of the so-called New Central Bank Act and aims “to preserve the integrity of Philippine currency.” The replacement will use improved security features for our bills.

2015 San Pablo City, Laguna Coco Festival Schedule of Activities

The festive atmosphere continues in the city of San Pablo here in Laguna with the coming of this year’s Coco Festival. Bayanihan sa Katedral: A Call for Help for the Renovation and Preservation of San Pablo Cathedral, San Pablo City, Laguna

The San Pablo Cathedral (Saint Paul the First Hermit Cathedral) seems to be a beacon in the center of the city, towering amidst the buzzing city that promises to be more urbanized in the coming years. And as the years passed by, it stands prone to the changes of its surroundings. Now the cathedral administration thought it high time to preserve the said cathedral for the coming years. 

The makeover of the cathedral already started in 2011 (see my post 'Gradual Makeovers of San Pablo City Cathedral' here) with the removal of some of the monuments outside to give way to a wider parking space. But it seemed now that it was part of a larger move to give the cathedral area its original look. A recent removal of the canopy attached a few years back to the church façade is evidence to that (see my post The Upcoming Renovation of the San Pablo Cathedral Grounds and Patio  here). 

As they continue with this restoration, a simply request is being sent out to the residents of San Pablo as well as to the other people. This call, I believe, goes beyond religious reasons and should be seen as grounded on cultural and historical considerations as well.

Found below is the message placed outside the cathedral façade:

Nagmula sa isang simbahang kahoy noong 1590, nabuo ang isang matibay at matayog na simbahang yari sa bato at tisa noong 1754.

Ngayong 2014, makalipas ang tatlong daang taon (300 years), ang ating Katedral ay patuloy na kumukupkop at nagbibigay proteksiyon at bubong sa libu-libong maninimba sa Lungsod ng San Pablo.

Ito ay isang Heritage Church sa Pilipinas.

Ito ang Mother Church ng Diosesis ng San Pablo at pinakamahalagang simbahan sa buong Laguna.

Kaya karapat-dapat lamang na panatilihing matibay, malinis, at ligtas ang Katedral para sa lahat at sa mga susunod pang henerasyon.

Ito na ang tamang panahon ng Preservation at Restoration ng yamang ito ng ating simbahan at bayan.

Hindi lingid sa ating kaalaman ang epekto ng climate change sa ating pamumuhay; mas mainit ang panahon at mas malakas ang mga ulan at bagyo.

Handa ba ang istraktura ng ating Katedral sa mga pagbabagong ito?

Ayon sa isang pagsusuri ng mga dalubhasa, may mga depekto sa istraktura ng ating Katedral, tulad ng pagbalot ng semento sa harap ng simbahan Cathedral Facade. 

Hindi nakahihinga ang tisa sa loob at nabababad sa tubig, isang dahilan upang ito ay mabilis humina at mapulbos. Ang tamang solusyon dito ay tuklapin ang mga semento at ibalik ang original na materyal na ginamit noong ikalabingwalong siglo - ang lime o calcium oxide na magdidikit at magpapatibay muli sa mga tisa at bato.

Sa tulong ng Escuela Taller, isang grupo na binuo sa pamahaalaan ng Espanya upang iwasto ang preservation ng mga Spanish Colonial Churches sa Latin America at Pilipinas, sisimulan natin ang malawakang pag-aayos ng ating Katedral. Sinangguni rin ang National Historical Commission tungkol sa proyektong ito.

Lubhang mahalaga ang gawaing ito para sa ating lahat. 

Nasa ating mga kamay ang pangangalaga ng ating Katedral.

Kung tayong lahat ay bukas palad na tutulong at makikibalikat sa bayanihang ito, sa biyaya ng Diyos, ang lahat ay matutupad at magaganap.

Suportahan natin ang ating simbahan.

Maging kabilang.

Ipaabot ang inyong donasyon sa tanggapan ng ating Katedral.

Liliw Gat Tayaw Tsinelas Festival 2014 Program of Activities

Dubbed as the Tsinelas Capital of Laguna, the town of Liliw in Laguna has, in recent years, held the Gat Tayaw Tsinelas Festival, a celebration of the town’s main product – tsinelas. This year’s fest carries the tag line: “Halina’t tuklasin ang ganda ng bayan ng Liliw!!!” and will be held from April 22 to April 27, a week-long festival.

Instituto Cervantes Manila’s Día del Libro 2014

A celebration of books and Spanish language will be coming again as Instituto Cervantes Manila holds the annual Día del Libro or the International Book Day. This year the venue will be held (back again) in the Instituto’s home at T. M. Kalaw Street in Ermita, Manila. There will be contests and corresponding prizes so do not miss the opportunity to come! Remember the date: April 26, 2014, from 10:00 am to 05:00 pm, possibly beyond that.
